In last week’s blog, I detailed Part 1 of our mini-series on How to Teach Discussion.  If you didn’t read that yet, I encourage you to do so!  Click here to check it out!

Part 2 this week is what you should do next to continue to explicitly and systematically teach kids to discuss!  Here we go!

Day 6

  • Break students into groups of three to practice Quality of Comments and Text Dependent Responses simultaneously
  • Provide feedback to small groups and debrief

Day 7

  • Teach Active Listening
  • Model for the class examples and non-examples of Active Listening
  • Debrief Active Listening

Day 8

  • Break students into groups of three to practice Quality of Comments, Text Dependent Responses and Active Listening simultaneously, using a very simple prompt
  • Provide feedback to small groups and debrief

Day 9

  • Repeat Day 8 until firm

Day 10

  • Provide more intense prompts for practice
  • Firm-up Quality of Comments, Text Dependent Responses and Active Listening through practice and focused feedback
  • Repeat Day 10 as needed
