One of the things I’ve learned as I have studied how to teach writing is that if students can’t analyze a source of any kind, there is virtually no chance that they’ll be able to write from a source.  Since we’ve moved in the past 5 years to writing from sources (versus writing from what the reader only things about a topic), the ability to analyze a document or source has taken on more importance!
