The evidence STRONGLY supports discussion as a means to teach, practice and assess comprehension, but you have to structure it right and practice it often for it to be a success.  So, here are a few steps from Michael Kamil on how to boost comprehension through extended discussion:

     1.  Carefully prepare for the discussion
     2.  Ask follow-up questions that help provide continuity and extend the discussion
3.  Provide a task or a discussion format that students can follow when they discuss texts together in small groups
4.  Develop and practice the use of specific discussion protocol
